Ad giants spill their AI secrets

The world’s biggest advertisers, including Nestlé, Unilever, and WPP have flocked to generative AI as they look to cut costs and boost productivity.

Here’s what you need to know.

Examples and results

  • WPP and Mondelez (the company that owns Cadbury): Used AI to get Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan to ‘ask’ passers-by to shop at 2,000 local stores during Diwali. Small businesses then used a microsite to generate versions of the ad using their own store.


    Results: 130,000 ads were created, gaining 94 million views across YouTube and Facebook.


  • Nestlé: With the help of Dall-E 2, it “revealed” imaginary scenes beyond the border of the famous Vermeer painting, ‘The Milkmaid’.


    Results: Generated 1,000 iterations and unlocked $766,010 worth of media value (i.e. public exposure).


  • Unilever (which owns 400+ brands, including Dove soap and Ben & Jerry’s): Used AI to write product descriptions and create visual content.
